… ABOUT MARY HEILMANN …
Mary Heilmann is known as one of the most influential contemporary artists alive. In the past years she was shown in various solo exhitibions, such as at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and in 2013 the prestigious Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Germany dedicated a collaborative show with Binky Palermo to her.
This honouring of her as an artist is foremost based on her innovative way of thinking which has created an individual language of imagery, sculpture and design over the years. Although it is undeniable that Heilmann’s work is strongly inspired by art historical references of minimalism and abstract expressionism, her ways of combining different features is truly unique. She develops abstraction of already existing use of forms, shifts geometrical perspectives and uses gestural gradients of colour to break-up structures.
Another exceptional feature of Heilmanns work are her biographical and associative references, which are often wittily pointed out in the titles of her work. Her pieces thus work as a kind of mediator between her artistically expression and her personal world of memory and association. They refer to the artist’s private experiences and dreams, as well as to musical and aesthetical influences and current affairs.
… ABOUT THE EDITION …
Artflash is delighted to present Mary Heilmanns work „It’s raining today“. As an exclusive publication for the prestigious German art magazine “Texte zur Kunst” in 2009, the inkjet print was produced as an edition of 100+20 copies – artflash acquired the last remaining copies, all signed and numbered. The work can easily be integrated into Heilmann’s general cannon of forms, but takes an exceptional stand when it comes to coloristic matters.
Heilmann who is generally delighted in working with an expressional spectrum of colours has here chosen to use a rather darker palette. The 35,6 cm x 28 cm large print shows a black- and white checkered pattern which points towards a vanishing point on the top right side of the image. This perspective is broken-up by several layers of black paint that have been poured on the canvas from the top onwards. With a combination of geometrical and pastose paint application, Heilmann creates abstractions of minimalistic and expressional language of form and thus stays true to her very own understanding of genre and brushwork. The title “It’s raining today” presents another significant and characteristic feature of Heilmanns oeuvre, in subtlety referring to a personal experience or memory and in raising awareness of a nostalgic notion. The thickly applied, black layers of colour evoke the association of an overcast sky, while dark streaks and splashes of paint seem to emphasize the reference of raindrops depicted in the work’s title.
